Wondering How Many .AU Domains Remain Contested?

Following my article last week where I advised readers that the .au priority renewals had finally been sorted out for this year, I decided to try and find out how many still remain contested (more than one party has a current priority application for a particular .au domain in the system).

So I sent Bruce Tonkin from auDA an email, and he replied very quickly.

He said:

There are approximately 3,660 domains left in contention. This compares with 4,690 in contention in Nov 2023.

About 650 applications were recently allocated following the renewal process.

I was surprised at this – I thought the number would be greater.

The question that didn’t get answered (and probably won’t be)!

One question that I asked Bruce nearly two weeks ago didn’t get answered though (no surprises there)!

Are you able to tell me if any applicants were allowed late renewals, and if so, how many (and which ones)? There is no “tool” that tells you this.

There are many rumours flying around that certain registrars were cut some slack and allowed extra time to get their final reports in to the Registry. If this is the case, then that is blatantly unfair to those of us who followed the rules and time guidelines.

It’s only natural that potentially affected registrants feel aggrieved by this possibility.
