As something different, we’ve asked the current registrant Mark Wakely to give us the background to his original acquisition. He also outlines what he believes is the potential for a new registrant. His story is below.

Mark is a Sydney-based writer and retired ABC journalist, who was a long-time Radio National arts executive producer. With a life-long interest in architecture, Mark’s books include Dream Home, a multi-faceted reflection on the meaning of home.

He writes:

As an author and journalist specialising in architecture, I acquired dreamhome.com.au over 20 years ago when my first book, Dream Home, was published by Allen & Unwin.

Dream Home seemed the perfect title for a book exploring what our homes mean to us as we go through life, from kids building cubbies to one day, if lucky, finding ourselves working with architects, builders and designers to turn into a reality the home we have carefully imagined, room by room, in our daydreams.

I was fortunate enough to be able to register dreamhome.com.au in the relatively early days of the internet. Over the past two decades, it’s helped me bring my architectural writing to public attention and, of course, market my book. Now that I’m retired it’s time for it to serve others.

The phrase “dream home” is deeply embedded in Australian culture. These two little words encompass the lifestyle ideals of a nation and every citizen’s aspiration for a place to call their own; they seem to spell “hope” in flashing neon.

And while home ownership becomes an increasingly difficult goal for many, the words “dream home” continue to symbolise more than just a physical structure; they embody our aspirations, personal tastes, and the pursuit of a better quality of life.

Imagining our dream homes through newspapers and design magazines, and Saturday morning real estate browsing (whether in the market or not) has become a favourite national pastime. Some of our most popular television shows — like “The Block” and “House Rules” and indeed “Dream Home” — have highlighted home renovation and the pursuit of creating one’s ideal living space.

Little wonder that “dream home” is such a popular catchphrase for real estate agents, who frequently use it in advertising campaigns. Meanwhile, some of our nation’s most worthwhile charities raise funds through home lotteries, where the first prize is that “dream home” sitting on its own little piece of Australia.

Dreamhome.com.au — bundled along with the affiliated domain names, dreamhome.au and dreamhome.net.au — represents a rare opportunity, a marketing gift.

It offers enormous marketing and brand-recognition potential for anyone involved in the home building industry; home renovation services; architectural or interior design businesses; real estate agents; banks and mortgage brokers; home lotteries; home design media from print to screen; holiday home stays; furniture store chains, and many others.

For those interested in Mark’s book “Dream Home” details are still available below on the publisher’s link, somewhat more cumbersome than dreamhome.com.au
