.au Domain Name Sales Have Rocketed Recently

At Profit, we have sold quite a number of .au direct domains since their launch in 2022.

In the last few months in particular, buyers have snapped up a selection of premium one-word .au domains. We’ve also sold a few 3-letter .au domains to endusers.

That said, .com.au still outsells the .au by a very significant margin.

In terms of value comparison, our experience to date shows that the average sales price of an .au is about 10% of its .com.au equivalent. Of course, there are exceptions both higher and lower.

Why do .au domain names sell?

Price and availability is the simple answer.

Most premium / good .com.au have long been taken, and if they do happen to come up on the aftermarket, there is generally a fair bit of competition for the better ones.

With .au being relatively new, the market has determined that .com.au is king. Simple as that.

However, if you can’t get the com.au for whatever reason (already taken or asking price too high for your budget), then the .au equivalent is the next best – and the price tag is excellent.

auDA is promoting .au again

In a recent member newsletter, auDA advised that they have launched their “Aussies get it” campaign.

This campaign is a bit of a “catchall” in that promotes all .au extensions. Go to getyou.au.

I think any promotion is great, and so it’s good to see auDA putting money into this.

In terms of the “success” of .au direct over the past three years, the auDA graphic below is interesting. (This was in their newsletter). According to the auDA website, there are a total of 4,261,331 Aussie domain names under management, and .au direct comprise 768,045 of them (about 18%).
